Happy, Healthy, and Fit 2012 to all the Patagonia Fitness Fans!

Date: 31 Dec 2011 Comments:0

Hi everyone!

I wanted to finish a great year saying thank you  to all the individuals that have given me the opportunity to train, treat, and coach them in 2011.  I have the most rewarding job in the world and you make it all possible. Also, I wanted to congratulate all of you that have achieved more than you could have envisioned at the beginning of this year (you know who you are), and the rest that are well on their way to living a healthy, fit, and positive lifestyle.

On my final run on the last day of the year today (it was an amazing 54 degrees in JC) I started thinking of all the individuals that will have a fitness/wellness resolution for 2012.  Like every year, there are sure to be a great deal of people looking to get “in shape” and live healthier  in the new year. If you should be one of them, at the very least I would like to give you some words to consider and some phrases to ponder on…

- Please start by reading my article below:

http://patagoniafitness.com/2010/12/do-it-in-2012-make-your-fitness-resolution-happen/

- Do not “try to do it” in 2012. That is an almost sure path to failure. Instead commit yourself to do it. Give your plan ( you do have a plan right?! – “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” ) 100% effort for 6 weeks and only then decide if you are happy with your results.

- It is not easy but simple. You can absolutely, without a doubt, lose the weight, get fit, and be healthier. And it is not complicated.  It will take daily effort but not sacrifice.

- Achieving a healthier and more fit you is the single best thing you can do to help you in all areas in life. You will sleep better, have more focus, be more positive, have more energy, more motivation, look your best, and feel your best. You will be a better person to yourself and to others.

- Read at least one of the books in my recommended list: Let me add here that I have just finished reading two more great books that will surely be worth your time reading and applying: Eat to live (Joel Fuhrman, M.D.) and Power Foods (from the editors of whole living magazine). Knowledge is motivational and all these books help to spark sustainable change.

-  Not a book worm…watch one of the following documentaries: Food Matters, Ingredients, Forks over Knives, Food Inc.

- Eat more veggies. Actually, eat more raw veggies. There are many ways to enjoy eating more veggies and raw veggies. If you have no desire to eat veggies it may be because of the way you have been eating for a long time…make small daily changes.

- Every single food, activity, and lifestyle choice you make, no matter how small, will get you closer or farther away from your ideal self.

- Eat less animal products. Any way you slice it animal products are linked to ill health. They should make a small part of your daily diet and only a quarter of your main plates.

- Always aim to buy the most local well grown products you can find. If they are organic even better of course.  Why? By buying organic not only are you eating less pesticides but you are shaping a healthier and better environment. Yes, organic is more expensive and price is often very important. At least try to buy the 12 most sprayed fruits and veggies organic. You will be eating 90% less pesticides if you do this according to the Environmental Working Group.  Find out what to buy organic at:

…Well, there you go!  Just some words that came to my mind and though would help you in your journey. Feel free to surf the rest of my site for more good info!

May you have the healthiest, fittest, and happiest 2012!

Slow! the new “FAST” in Fitness. (part two)

Date: 17 Jan 2011 Comments:0

So, I hope that after reading part one of this series you agree with me that making exercise, healthy eating, and positive habits a part of your daily life is the surest way to reach your fitness, wellness, and ultimately your life goals.  You may feel I may be going a bit too far with saying that “working out regularly” will help you with, say for example…getting the job you are seeking.  But the reality is that our thoughts, actions, motivation, goals, and achievements are closely connected and foster each other.  Positive thoughts give one the motivation to partake in the needed actions which will create the possibilities that will fulfill your goals. Physiologically, the brain and the body have a symbiotic relationship and feed of each other.  By engaging in moderate to high intensity exercise daily (at least 5 x/week for 30 min.) you “power up” and enable your brain (mostly through hormones released during and post exercise bouts) to provide you with motivation, focus, and results. By eating healthy meals and snacks you keep your body with constant energy and nutrition to stay healthy and strong.  And by practicing daily healthy habits such as getting adequate quality sleep, staying well hydrated, engaging in social gatherings (without overdoing the drinks :) , and taking a 5 minute daily “meditation” break, you give your mind and body what it craves to perform at its peak.

The key to succeeding with adapting and maintaining this lifestyle that will pay you back huge dividends in every aspect of your life is making it SUSTAINABLE ! I love that word, don’t you? I love it because it is the vague but powerful  answer to directing our efforts in becoming a healthier, fitter, and more positive individual. In a comment to part one’s article, my good friend and experienced fitness professional Marco Ferdinandi supported my view by stating, “Slow is the way to go. There is no reason to rush because getting there now has no advantage over being there always.”

You should love the word because it naturally becomes your “friend” in the journey to a new fitter, healthier, and more positive you! All your “real” excuses for example, may now have merit. Maybe at the current time it is not “sustainable” for you to have a goal of working out 5 times a week, to pack a healthy lunch every day, or to cook a healthy dinner every night.  Instead, plan your goals around what is sustainable for you at this time, keep up with them and progress them when able.  The key is to take small but consistent daily steps in all the above areas.  MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU! Trust the process! Stay focused and with time, you will be amazed at the changes that you will achieve!  For example losing a pound a week is a sustainable and very realistic goal for most overweight individuals. At first, it seems like a small goal.  But keep it up for 6 months and you will find yourself 24 pounds lighter!

Start by thinking SLOW and SUSTAINABLE.

Write down some detailed goals for yourself. What do you want to accomplish workout wise? How are you going to improve on your healthy eating habits? What positive daily habits will you engage in that will help you achieve your goals?

Pick a workout that you like and that you will “stick to” and progress it slowly but frequently to avoid injuries, training plateaus, and boredom.

Progress slow. Eat slow. Age slow,

Marco-
